PRIMARY ELECTIONS IN THE USA
We know American election system is rather complicated for students to understand. So on December 16 American Corner Turkmenabat hosted a presentation "The American System of Primary Elections" by Ted Massey, the second secretary of the US embassy. The guest speaker acquainted participants with the democratic and republican parties, which are governing in the United States of America, about the first nominations and when they were held. Ted Massey explained the President’s nomination process and showed some pictures of candidates. At the end of this event American Corner visitors asked a lot of questions about US government and elections, thus Ted Massey answered them with big pleasure. Students developed their general knowledge about US government and learned about the system of primary elections in the United States of America.
GUEST SPEAKER AT THE MARY AMERICAN CORNER
On December 18, Nariman Tursunov, CAEF Coordinator from ACCELS conducted a presentation for 27-American Corner visitors among them they were high school and middle school students, college students and school graduates. During the presentation Nariman talked about the purpose of the CAEF Scholarship, what it provides, and ways to apply for it and different opportunities after graduating KIMEP. As the presentation grew a huge interest in the audience, students asked a numerous of questions regarding the topic. At the end of the presentation one of the winners of the CAEF Scholarship, Jemal Agayeva FLEX’10, currently studying in KIMEP shared her success stories at KIMEP. At the end of the presentation students had a discussion with the presenters and were encouraged to apply for CAEF scholarship.
MAKING CHRISTMAS STOCKINGS
On December 18, there was a making Christmas stocking activity at the Dashoguz American Corner. 20 different aged participants took part in this cultural activity. The main goals of the activity were to share American Culture traditions through one of the happiest holidays of the year, to teach how to make special Christmas stocking. At the beginning Madina Sabirova, FLEX alumna `11 shared her Christmas experience gained in USA and talked about the history of Christmas Celebration in the USA and the other parts of the world. Afterwards she showed to participants the ways of doing personalized stocking and everybody started making their own ones. While making their own stockings they did a break in order to write down their wishes for upcoming year. Following, middle school students sang various Christmas songs such as “Let it snow”, “Jingle bells”, “Last Christmas” and so on.
“Just Say It”- team building activity (ACCESS camp).
On October 23rd, teachers of ACCESS groups organized a camp for their students. They had around 50 students. At the beginning of the event students were divided into 5 teams. Each team was taught by different teacher. Madina Sabirova`11 showed her interest in helping others; she wanted to make a great contribution towards students and held various team building games with different groups who was the part of the ACCESS camp.
Independence Day at the Turkmenabat American Corner.
On October 26, American Corner visitors celebrated the Independence Day. At first Tatyana Malyhina’10 organized a presentation that was dedicated to the history of Turkmenistan and its Independence. Tatyana’10 included a lot of pictures of ancient Turkmenistan in her presentation. Furthermore Nina Afanasyeva showed a presentation about friendship relations between USA and Turkmenistan. The manager of American Corner talked about recent new at the US embassy and later on participants asked a lot of question.
At the end of this event Tatyana Malyhina’10 and Yevgeniya Samitova’10 held a Talented Show. Thus participants read a poem about our Motherland, sang a song and etc. AC visitors enjoyed watching the performances.
Conflict Resolution Workshop
On October 29-30, Govher Bairamdurdiyeva BFTF’11, Maya Atayeva BFTF’11, Ogulsheker Mammetgurbanova FLEX’11 and Selbi Shamuradova FLEX’11 conducted “Conflict Resolution Workshop” for 15 American Corner visitors- high and middle school students and school graduates. The main goal of the workshop was to inform students about conflict resolution and teach them how to make decisions, solve problems, cooperate and collaborate with each other. Additionally participants had a chance to improve their leadership, teambuilding, English speaking and debate skills.
The workshop was held in an interactive way which helped the attendees gain the information easier. The organizers started the first day with an icebreaker that helped facilitators get to know each other better and closer. The Alumni made such Power Point Presentations as: Conflict and Conflict Styles, Cooperation and Collaboration, Conflict and Peace, 5 Steps to solve a problem and Pre-mediation, Debate and Dialogue, Leadership and Teambuilding Skills. In order to check the students gained knowledge, the seminar contained various numbers of activities and games: ways to solve a problem, conflict differences, leader identification, debate and pre-mediation. At the end of the workshop the students evaluated Conflict Resolution Workshop and gave some suggestions on how to improve the training in future.
